The painting Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer (Wanderer above the Sea of Fog) by Caspar David Friedrich, c. 1818, is part of the collection of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg.

“The hiker stands as a back figure in the center of the composition. He looks down on an almost impenetrable sea of fog in the midst of a rocky landscape - a metaphor for life as an ominous journey into the unknown.”1

Any questions or comments about these notes can be directed to Dr Eric Hall (ehall001@dundee.ac.uk).
